Our mission is to empower you to recognise quickly, react calmly and respond appropriately to a baby or child health emergency
Servicing the Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Hunter Regions
Focusing on providing real life, practical advice, we want to ensure you can respond with confidence when faced with a crisis. We concentrate on the newborn stage right through to about 8 years of age, but most of the skills you will master during our 'First Years Workshop' can be transferred to adult first aid.
With our unique and straightforward approach, participants improve their confidence and learn new skills with a 3 hour workshop.
First Years First Aid is run by a qualified Intensive Care Paramedic, with over a decades worth of experience. More importantly, Jess is a mum to two children.
“I have been a Paramedic and facilitated first aid courses for years, but it wasn’t until I had my own babies that I fully appreciated how frightening it can be when they are sick or injured. This was really amplified when I suffered from post natal anxiety around my first babies health and well-being. I felt really helpless during this time, so it’s my passion to help parents feel empowered, not fearful, when their little ones are sick, injured or suffering."

Trainer Bio:
Jess is an Intensive Care Paramedic working locally in the Hunter. After studying her Bachelor degree in Clinical Practice (Paramedics) she began work as an Advanced Life Support Officer with Ambulance Victoria in 2010.
After moving back to the Hunter region to be closer to family, Jess started with NSW Ambulance in 2012. Working in both rural and metropolitan areas allowed her to complete further study, including a Post Graduate Certificate in Intensive Care Paramedics and her Certificate iv in Training and Assessment. In 2016, Jess was selected to upskill to a Paramedic Specialist (Intensive Care Paramedic). Since this time, Jess has had a family of her own, and currently works in Ambulance Education, providing high quality training for Qualified Paramedics.
She has worked with a partnership RTO to facilitate first aid training for the last 8 years.
The First Years Workshop was created as she saw many other mums struggling with their decisions when faced with a health emergency. She believes knowledge is power and that by arming yourself with skills and information, you can advocate for your child's health. The practical, simple features of a First Years Workshop are designed to leave parents and care givers feeling confident and ready to do small things really well, to make a big impact on their children's health journey.
Always striving to ensure the best clinical care and training, our content has also been reviewed by registered paediatric nurses and midwives.
Workshop Description and Bookings
First Years Workshop
At some point, every family will experience a baby or child health concern.
Learn how to deal with it calmly in our specialised baby and child health workshops.
We often find that when faced with a medical emergency, we just don’t know what to do, especially with the heightened fear when it happens to our own child. Freezing and panic may be natural reactions, but they aren't helpful in an emergency situation. Our goal is to empower people through the expansion of knowledge and skills. This workshop is a great way to begin to feel confident in your decisions of when to seek help, as well as understanding what to do to help your child.
The First Years Workshop covers common medical complaints and injuries that our young ones may sustain.
It's a great way to learn essential skills to help keep you calm, before you may need them.
In our 3 hour workshop you will learn:
-
How to recognise common childhood illnesses and injuries
-
How to monitor for red flags to know when to seek help
-
Practical application of critical first aid which may mean the difference in your child's health outcomes.
-
Where to find the appropriate help
